The Sow To Her Wallowing?
This is a true story, related by Brother Jack Peterson of Provo,
Utah.
A missionary was preparing to go
on his mission and was asked by his bishop what scripture he would like to have
engraved on his missionary plaque. The missionary chose 3 Nephi 7:18, which reads, "...he had greater
power than they, for it were not possible that they could disbelieve his words,
for so great was his faith on the Lord Jesus Christ that angels did minister
unto him daily." Somewhere between
the bishop's office and the engraver's work order, the number 1 was left out of
the request, and the engraver inadvertently engraved 3 Nephi 7:8 on the
plaque. This scripture reads "…the
more part of the people had turned from their righteousness, like the dog to
his vomit, or like the sow to her wallowing in the mire." The missionary's family enjoyed this gaffe so
much they decided to leave the plaque as it was. The entire ward could now enjoy the joke for the
two years that the missionary served on his mission.
