QUESTION: As of October 6, 2007, how many of our General Authorities have been granted "emeritus" status since 1978, the year in which the emeritus designation was first announced?  Who has been an emeritus General Authority the longest?  How many emeritus General Authorities are living presently?

ANSWER: As of October 6, 2007, 58 General Authorities have been granted emeritus status.  Elder Eldred G. Smith has served the longest as an emeritus General Authority.  He completed 28 years as an emeritus General Authority on October 6, 2007.  Of the 58 brethren granted emeritus status, 40 are still living and 18 have passed away.
