Ordained apostles who were not members of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles

1. Joseph Smith: Joseph was ordained an apostle in May of 1829. He served as the First Elder of the Church and as the President of the High Priesthood until his martyrdom. The Quorum of the Twelve was organized after the organization of the Quorum of the First Presidency.

2. Oliver Cowdery: Oliver was also ordained an apostle in May of 1829. He served as the Second Elder of the Church and also as an Assistant President of the Church. The Quorum of the Twelve was organized after the organization of the Presidency. Oliver was excommunicated on April 11, 1838.

3. Hyrum Smith: Upon Oliver Cowdery's excommunication from the Church, Hyrum was given all the priesthood and offices formerly held by Oliver, including the apostleship. This occurred on November 7, 1837. Hyrum served as an Assistant Counselor to Joseph, Assistant President, 2nd Counselor in the First Presidency, and as the Patriarch of the Church. He did not occupy a place in the Quorum of the Twelve.

4. Jedediah M Grant: Brigham Young called Jedediah Grant to serve as 2nd Counselor in the First Presidency and ordained him an apostle on April 7, 1854. He died after having served in the First Presidency for only 2 years and 8 months. He did not occupy a place in the Quorum of the Twelve. He is the father of President Heber J. Grant.

5. Daniel H Wells: Brigham Young called Daniel Wells to serve as 2nd Counselor in the First Presidency upon the death of Jedediah M Grant. Elder Wells was ordained an apostle on January 4, 1857. Upon the death of President Young, Daniel was sustained as a Counselor to the Twelve Apostles, but he did not occupy a position in the Quorum of the Twelve.

6. Joseph A Young: Joseph Young was ordained an apostle on February 4, 1864 by his father, Brigham Young. Elder Young did not serve in the First Presidency or in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

7. John Willard Young: John was ordained an apostle on February 4, 1864 by his father Brigham Young, and he served as Counselor, Assistant Counselor, and First Counselor to President Young. He was released at the death of his father, and sustained as a counselor to the Twelve.

8. Alvin R Dyer: Elder Dyer had been serving as an Assistant to the Twelve for nine years when President McKay called him to be a Counselor to the First Presidency, and ordained him an apostle. Upon President McKay's death, Elder Dyer resumed his position as an Assistant to the Twelve. He later served in the First Quorum of the Seventy.
